Propane vs. Electricity

Choose a Winner

propane Fitchburg, ma There’s a lot of buzz around the electrification movement. It’s the push for homes to rely fully on electric equipment. But there are disadvantages to an electric-powered home. Before you jump on the electrification bandwagon, let’s take a look at some of the ways electricity falls short of what propane can do.

There are a number of reasons to choose a home powered by propane. Here are a few things to consider when comparing a home that uses propane to one that only uses electricity:

1. Reliability of Propane

We’ve already seen it this summer. Power outages are happening with increasing regularity across the country. The US electric grid is flawed and can’t be relied on 100% of the time, especially after an extreme weather event. If a massive storm leaves your New England neighborhood in the dark, you won’t want to be dependent on electricity.

You want to have a source of heat and power that you can depend on every day of the year—no matter what. Propane gives you that reliability. It can power a whole-house generator that will keep your entire house up and running (including your HVAC system). And you can depend on Brideau Energy to make the propane delivery you need, even when you can’t count on the electric company.

2. Heating with Propane

Electric heat pumps are impractical in places like New England. Electric heat pumps become significantly less effective when the temperature approaches zero degrees. An electric heat pump simply won’t warm your home effectively during a harsh New England winter compared to a furnace or boiler.

3. Cost

Installing a heat pump is extremely expensive. On average, a new heat pump costs $20,000. On the other hand, you can purchase a new, highly efficient boiler or furnace for less than half that amount and still reduce your carbon footprint.

4. Efficiency of Propane

Appliances that run on propane are tremendously efficient—and usually more efficient than their electric counterparts. That means they cost less to operate. Compared to an electric water heater, a propane water heater can produce twice as much hot water in the same amount of time. Propane clothes dryers work 25% faster than their electric counterparts and generate less static and wear and tear on your clothes. Also, propane space heaters are significantly more efficient than electric space heaters.

Consider the Environment

In short, there are numerous advantages to a home powered by propane. Furthermore, electricity has its drawbacks. Because most of our country’s electricity is generated by coal-burning power plants, electricity is America’s second-largest source of greenhouse gases. Only transportation ranks higher.
