You may have noticed that your propane tank is never 100% full after a delivery. That’s intentional. Why? Propane is a liquid. When liquids warm up, they expand. Propane in particular expands a lot and quickly. In fact, it expands about 17 times the volume water does given a set temperature increase. For this reason, our technicians leave extra space so the propane can safely expand. For above-ground tanks, that means filling the tank to about 80% capacity. Underground tanks are filled slightly more because in being underground they’re insulated against big temperature swings. So now you know why your propane tank isn’t 100% full after delivery.
