Proud to heat the Chair City!

Established in 1785, Gardner, MA takes its name from Colonel Thomas Gardner, a comrade of one of the town founders. Gardner fell at the Battle of Bunker Hill, and the town’s name honors his sacrifice.

In its early years, Gardner made a name as an industrial hub in Massachusetts, with a sawmill, blacksmith, liveries, woodworking factory, and several shops. These first decades also saw the beginning of its furniture-making industry, a specialty that would earn Gardner the name “Chair City of the World.” Gardner’s factories produced more than 1.2 million chairs annually!
Throughout the 19th century, Gardner’s population grew at a fantastic pace. In 1891, the establishment of the Gardner Electric Railway alleviated the issue of impassible roads in the winter. Gardner officially became a city on January 1, 1923!

Today, much of Gardner’s furniture manufacturing has left, but the city is still considered the “Furniture Capital of New England” for its many outlets. Its major landmarks include Dunn State Park, Gardner Heritage State Park, Lake Wampanoag Wildlife Sanctuary, Gardner Municipal Golf Course, and Mount Wachusett Community College. Visitors come year-round to shop, hike, fish, bike, and indulge in the city’s restaurants and breweries.
