propane tanks massachusetts Because there are so many different ways to use propane in and around your Massachusetts home and beyond, propane gets stored in different ways. At Brideau Energy, we make having a propane tank as easy as possible. Keep reading to learn more about the propane tanks and propane services we offer.

Tank Sizes

When it comes to propane tanks, there’s no one size fits all option. Our technicians are trained and knowledgeable. We understand all the variables that need to be considered when trying to pick the right tank. For example: How big is your home? How many gallons of propane do you use (on average) every month? Do you use propane for home heating, to power appliances, or both?

Here’s an overview of the different tank sizes Brideau Energy offers:

  • 60-gallon tanks: Tanks of this size are ideal for small propane appliances such as a grill or small propane space heater.
  • 120-gallon tanks: Tanks of this size are not large enough for whole-house heating. They are best-suited for homes that require a significant amount of propane for appliances like stoves, space heaters, clothes dryers, water heaters, and fireplaces.
  • 320-gallon to 500-gallon tanks: Tanks of this size are appropriate for whole-house heating in addition to propane appliances.
  • 1,000-gallon tanks: Tanks of this size are appropriate for large residential homes that require a commercial propane tank for heating and powering several high-BTU appliances. They are also used for commercial and industrial facilities.

Not sure which tank size is right for your home? The team at Brideau Energy can help you make the right choice.

Propane Tank Monitoring

Brideau Energy is there for you even after you purchase or lease your propane tank. We recommend that all our customers sign up for tank monitoring. Having a wireless tank monitor will give you peace of mind. There’s virtually no chance you’ll experience a run-out and it removes the guesswork when it comes to scheduling your deliveries.

Tank Monitoring Benefits

  • Having a tank monitor makes it clear when a fuel delivery is in order.
  • A tank monitor provides “low tank” alerts.
  • With a tank monitor, you won’t have a run-out. That saves you money and gives you peace of mind.

Propane 101

Propane is a product of natural gas processing and petroleum refining. It’s often compressed and stored as a liquid. You may also hear it referred to as liquefied petroleum gas, LPG or LP. Propane is nontoxic and colorless.

What Can Propane Do?

There is so much propane can do residentially and commercially. Propane is an extremely versatile fuel. It can be used for heating, water heating, cooking, and powering a variety of appliances. It can also fuel vehicles. When used as a fuel for vehicles it’s called propane Autogas.

What Are Propane’s Benefits?

Propane offers a lot of benefits. That makes propane a good choice for your New England home. Here are some of the advantages propane offers:

  • Safety: Propane is one of the safest fuel options for heating and running appliances.
  • Efficiency: Propane’s average efficiency is over 90%. It heats up extremely quickly.
  • Budget Friendly: Propane’s high efficiency makes it a cost-effective fuel option. Propane appliances cost less to operate than their electric counterparts.
  • Accessible: Propane is highly portable, so you can use it wherever you need it. That makes it ideal for anyone who spends time off the grid or who lives in an area where it’s difficult to secure utility services. With a propane tank on your property, you always have the propane you need at your disposal. That’s especially true when you trust your propane delivery to a reliable company like Brideau Energy.

Is an Upgrade Worth It?

heating system upgrade massachusetts Autumn is a great season. The leaves change color. The temperatures dip, but there are still lots of lovely sunny days. And if you like pumpkin spice, you’re living your best life.

Autumn is also a great time to make sure your home’s heating system is ready to get you through whatever winter has in store. It may even be time to purchase a new heating system.

When you upgrade to a new and more efficient heating system, your family will enjoy greater comfort even on the coldest of days and you’ll enjoy the savings on your energy and repair bills.

An Intro to Boilers and Furnaces

Some people use the words “boiler” and “furnace” interchangeably, but they’re not the same thing. A boiler and a furnace can each be part of a home’s heating system, but they work differently.

Boilers are hydronic heating systems. They use hot water or steam to heat your home. A hot water boiler burns fuel to heat water that is then pumped through pipes to baseboards, radiators, in-floor radiant tubing, or other sealed hydronic devices throughout your Massachusetts home. With a steam boiler, the process is very similar. However, the water is converted to steam before circulating throughout your home.

Furnaces are forced air systems. Furnaces burn fuel to heat air. That hot air is then pushed through a system of ducts that lead to vents throughout the home.

You can tell which type of heating system a home uses by checking for radiators and vents. A home with radiators (or baseboards) has a boiler. A home with vents has a furnace.

Boiler & Furnace Costs

The cost of a new furnace or boiler can be worth it. An older furnace or boiler won’t run as efficiently, so your fuel and energy bills will be higher. An older system will also cost you more in repairs.

When is it time to replace your heating system? If your repair costs will be 50% or more than the cost of an upgrade, it’s better to make the investment in upgrading a high-efficiency heating system.

How much will it cost you to replace your heating system? While there are many variables that will be at play, here are some very general average costs.

The latest data shows that the average cost to replace an oil-fired furnace runs between $2,500 and $6,000, although a high-efficiency unit might increase that cost to closer to $10,000. Boilers are a little more expensive to replace. The cost to replace a boiler system can range from $3,000 to $6,000, but a high-efficiency boiler could be as much as $12,000 to install.

Bear in mind that these numbers are national averages, and costs range from region to region. There are also many other factors that can affect the cost of your heating system upgrade, including the brand you choose, the square footage of the home, the complexity of the installation, labor costs and the size of the heating system (in BTU power).

Installation & Service

You can rely on Brideau for heating installation and service. We install, service, and repair boilers and furnaces. Tips for Protecting Your Home & Saving Money

home winter ready massachusetts Fall is here and we’ve already begun to feel the chill in the air. Winter is just around the corner and will be here before you know it. There are some simple steps you can take now to help prepare your home for the winter months that will save you money. And especially if your home will be empty for any extended periods of time, winterizing your home now will help ensure you don’t come back to an expensive problem like burst pipes.

Tips for Winterizing Your Home

Whether you simply want to make your home more energy efficient and save money on your energy bills or you’re planning to leave your home empty for some extended periods of time, we recommend taking the following steps to winterize your home:

  1. Adjust your thermostat: When you and your family are away or asleep, you can lower your thermostat and save on heating costs. Just make sure you don’t turn your heat off completely. Winter in New England means freezing cold days and nights. That means you need to think about your pipes. You don’t want them to freeze or burst. If that happens, you’ll need professional plumbing services. For help with frozen pipes and all other plumbing services, look no further than Brideau Energy.
  2. Prevent freeze-ups: Another way to avoid a common winter plumbing problem is to turn off the water supply for any of your outdoor valves and drain the water from the pipes. Need help? Trust the plumbing pros at Brideau Energy. We offer expert service at a fair price.
  3. Adjust your water heater: Your water heater is responsible for a significant portion of your home’s energy costs—roughly 20%. If your home will be empty while you’re away on vacation this winter, you can lower the temperature on your water heater. Some water heaters even have a vacation setting. If yours doesn’t, you can lower the temperature 10 to 15 degrees Fahrenheit.
  4. Increase your home’s energy efficiency: The more energy efficient your home is, the more money you’ll save all winter and beyond. You’ll also find your home more comfortable because it will be easier to maintain the desired temperature. For year-round benefits, caulk your windows and add weather stripping to your doors. Make sure your home is well-insulated, especially the large spaces like the attic.

The master plumbers at Brideau Energy can help you prepare your plumbing system for winter and so much more. Here’s a selection of some of the plumbing services we offer:

Dear Customers,

On October 5, OPEC announced it would slash production by two million barrels a day. As a result, heating oil prices have spiked more than $1.20 per gallon, as of this writing.

This is not just impacting heating oil. Expect natural gas, electricity, gasoline, and diesel to move higher. (Fortunately, propane prices have remained more stable.) Of course, this is not simply about supply and demand. We’ve learned that when prices move this far, this fast, you can always see the impact of Wall Street firms that jump in to take advantage of the momentum to make a quick buck (or should we say millions of bucks.) It frustrates the heck out of us.

Of course, things can turn around just as quickly. We saw prices spike in spring only to plummet by more than a dollar in summer. There are just too many variables to know where things will go from here.

A few things to bear in mind

  • We hate high prices and volatility just as much as you do. It hurts our customers, hurts our company, and makes planning very difficult.
  • This year, supply issues could become problematic. While we have excellent relationships with our suppliers, it is imperative that you go on (or stay on) automatic delivery. This way, if we go on “allocation” from suppliers, have drivers out sick because of COVID, or face severe weather, we can manage capacity better and keep you warm.
  • Don’t be surprised by big bills. If you’d like to know how much you used last year so you can project this year’s bills more accurately, call us. This is going to be painful, but it will be helpful to be able to plan for it.
  • If you are having trouble keeping up with your payments, it is critical that you call us as soon as you realize there’s an issue. We can work with you but only if you communicate with us early.

We will try to keep you informed as events unfold. There are many things we can’t control, but we will always prioritize our existing customers over new ones. We will go the extra mile to keep you safe and warm. And we will be there when you need us.

Shocking Spike in Fuel Prices

Written on: March 10, 2022

Unsurprisingly, we’ve been getting many calls around two connected issues: the surge in fuel prices and supply concerns. People are astounded by how much prices have risen and how fast. So are we. They are also concerned that there will be interruptions in supply that will cause them to run out of fuel.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine shocked energy markets, sending crude oil to record territory and spiking all energy prices. We’ve had increases from our heating oil suppliers of over $1.25 per gallon in less than a week. Propane prices have been better but still increased over 40 cents per gallon. And the situation remains very fluid.

What’s Coming Next?

We don’t know where things will go from here. One thing we can tell you is that we hate this as much as you do. Some people are under the misconception that when prices rise, we make more money. The opposite is true. People cut back usage. They have trouble paying their bills, and our receivables skyrocket. Meanwhile, we must pay our suppliers in just ten days. We must borrow much more from the bank. It is an awful mess for everyone.

One thing you can count on is that we will not let you run out. We have been in business for many years and have very strong relationships with suppliers and financial institutions. We are already getting calls from customers who are with other companies that can’t say the same. These customers are unable to get deliveries for 20 days out. You don’t have to worry about that with us.

If you are having trouble paying your bill, talk to us before it becomes a problem. Many times, we can work out something to give you more time, especially if you’ve been with us a while. We can also set you up on a monthly payment plan.

Nothing will make us happier than when prices start dropping. Until then, trust us to look out for you, and let’s pray for the people of Ukraine.

What Is It? And Is It a Good Choice for Your Home?

about heating oil massachusetts Summer is officially behind us. It’s autumn now. Winter is just around the corner. The temperatures have already begun to drop, and perhaps you’ve already turned up the thermostat in your Central Massachusetts or Southern New Hampshire home. That means your furnace or boiler is already starting to work harder, and you’ll soon start needing to order heating oil more frequently than you did during the summer months.

As your trusted fuel provider, Brideau Energy seeks to make your heating oil delivery easy, safe, and convenient. Using heating oil for your home is something you can feel good about, and we want you to know the reasons why.

What Is Heating Oil?

Heating oil is made from crude oil that has gone through a refining process called distillation. Through the process of distillation, hydrocarbons are removed from the crude oil and become a substance that can be further purified and blended to make the heating oil that works in your furnace or boiler.

However, Brideau Energy doesn’t just deliver heating oil, we deliver Bioheat Plus® fuel. Bioheat Plus is a blend of ultra-low-sulfur heating oil and renewable biodiesel. It’s produced domestically, and it offers several advantages over traditional heating oil.

Why Is Heating Oil a Good Choice?

There are a number of benefits to using heating oil in your Massachusetts or New Hampshire. Let’s take a look at some of the benefits heating oil offers:

  • Heating oil is safe. The heating oil that gets delivered to your home won’t explode. It only becomes combustible once it’s been vaporized by an oil burner at temperatures above 140° Fahrenheit. In fact, if you dropped a lit match in a bucket of heating oil, it would go out like you’d dropped the match in water. Additionally, if there is a malfunction, safety devices within your unit are designed to shut your furnace or boiler off before carbon monoxide poisoning becomes a risk.
  • Heating oil is cleaner than you may think. Just like the car or phone you use today is much more advanced than the car or phone you used a decade ago, advancements have been made in heating oil over the years. And it keeps getting better. Much of the heating oil being used today has an ultra-low sulfur content. Brideau is proud to deliver Bioheat Plus® Fuel, a blend of ultra-low-sulfur heating oil and renewable biodiesel that cuts down on greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Heating oil is efficient. New oil heat systems are incredibly efficient. Some have efficiency ratings as high as 95%. This means you get more warmth using less fuel. That can add up to an annual savings of 30% on average. How does that compare to other options for heating your home? Heating oil burns up to 20% more efficiently than gas, and it’s 30% more efficient than electricity.
  • Heating oil is good for your system. When you use premium heating oil like the Bioheat Plus® Fuel Brideau delivers, your heating system runs more cleanly and that can lead to fewer repairs and better longevity for your home heating system. That also adds up to savings.

With so many benefits to heating oil, you can feel good about using it in your home. And Brideau Energy makes sure you get the best possible value for your New England home. That’s why we deliver top-quality heating oil to our customers in and around Fitchburg, Massachusetts.

We’ll Keep You Safe & Comfortable

As a family-owned, top-quality fuel company, Brideau Energy cares about our central Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire customers. You can feel good about the safety of the Bioheat Plus® fuel we deliver. It has been approved by ASTM International, an organization which sets industry standards for fuels and lubricants.

Reasons to Leave It to the Pros

gas appliance repair massachusettsYou rely on Brideau Energy for the propane you use in your New England home. We also offer complete propane tank services, including installation and monitoring. Looking to convert your home to propane? We can handle that as well.

Perhaps one of your propane appliances isn’t working the way it’s supposed to. For example, maybe your water heater isn’t performing. If you’re someone who likes to do things for yourself (especially when it might save you money), you might be tempted to try and fix your propane appliances yourself. As your propane provider and a company that values safety, we here at Brideau Energy would like to encourage you to think twice and three times before handling any propane appliance repairs yourself. It’s really something you should leave to a trained professional. Leave it to us.

Safety Matters

You might be tempted to try and fix your propane appliances yourself, but please don’t. It can be dangerous for you and your family, and you might end up damaging your equipment. All of your propane appliances should be installed, maintained, and repaired by a trained professional.

At Brideau Energy, we care about the safety of our customers. That’s why we encourage you to leave any propane appliance repairs to the professionals. A professional will have the proper knowledge and the correct tools for the advanced technology you find in many modern propane appliances. And many of those tools aren’t anything you’ll find at your local home improvement store. A trained professional will also be better able to identify any safety concerns with your appliance. Any money you might save trying to do it yourself isn’t worth the potential harm that could come to you or your family if you make a grave mistake.

Propane Appliance Care

Your propane appliances might look like a fun puzzle to try to figure out. Or you might think it looks very straightforward. But the truth is propane appliances often contain delicate parts that require expert handling. You simply won’t get the skill or expertise you need by watching videos online.

If you’re not trained, it’s easy to make a costly or dangerous mistake when trying to repair propane appliances. You could end up needing to call a professional to fix the original problem as well as any new problems your blunder creates. So trying to save money could end up costing you more in the end. No one wants that!

Your propane appliances are an investment. It’s worth protecting that investment by getting professional care. Think about how much a new water heater or furnace would cost. Weigh that against your temptation to try and fix it yourself and imagine if your attempts forced you to have to replace the appliance.

Finally, trying to repair your propane appliance yourself could void the warranty.

Brideau Energy Knows Propane

When it comes to repairing your propane appliances, leave it to the pros. Brideau Energy installs and services boilers, furnaces, and water heaters. And when you need to order propane or have a new tank installed, you can leave that to Brideau too.

Full Tank, Happy Tank

heating oil delivery masschusettsIt’s August in New England. Chances are staying warm this winter isn’t front of mind for you and your family. You’ve got some time before you you’ll need to pull out the boots and sweaters and pack away your sandals and tee-shirts. This is the season you’ll spend enjoying lobster rolls and pool parties.

Given some of the record-breaking heatwaves we’ve already had this summer, you’ve probably been spending a lot of time thinking of fun ways to beat the heat. It’s likely you haven’t been thinking much about your heating oil tank. However, even though winter is still months away, you still need to spend some time thinking about your heating oil tank.

The decisions you make now will affect your heating system’s ability to keep you and your family warm and comfortable during the throes of winter. As a responsible heating oil customer, it’s important to never let your heating oil tank run down to empty. That’s true even during the summer months. Actually, it’s a good idea to keep your tank full during the summer. And Brideau Energy delivers top-quality heating oil to our customers in and around Fitchburg, Massachusetts.

Why A Full Tank Is Better

There are some serious reasons to keep a full heating oil tank—even during the summer. If your heating oil tank gets too close to empty, debris can clog your oil filters. That can reduce the efficiency of your heating system. Worse than that, it could cause your heating system to fail. By keeping enough heating oil in your tank, you can avoid the costly repairs associated with a heating system failure. You’ll also avoid the increases in your bill that result from an inefficient system.

Another reason to keep a full or fuller heating oil tank is condensation. During the summer months, hot and humid days are typically followed by cooler nights. Those conditions can accelerate a buildup of condensation in your tank. And if your tank is aboveground, outside, or in an unshaded area, it’s even more vulnerable to condensation.

Why is condensation such a problem? Condensation can lead to rust in your tank, and that rust can cause your heating system to fail. Again, keeping enough heating oil in your tank helps you avoid some very costly problems.

How full is full enough? Ideally, you should keep your tank at least half full all summer long. But the fuller your tank, the less likely you are to experience any of the issues mentioned above. Summer is also usually the best time to fill your tank because heating oil prices tend to increase during the winter months. Heating oil prices have been abnormally high this summer, but they may go even higher once demand increases during the winter. Filling your tank now could mean buying your heating oil for a lower price if there’s another surge in prices this winter.

Helpful Tips for Checking Your Propane Level

gas grill tank massachsuettsAugust is the perfect time of year to enjoy your backyard—not to mention firing up the grill as often as possible! And if you’re doing exactly that, you should know also that grilling with propane is as easy and efficient as can be. However, one thing you don’t want to do is get caught without enough gas!

It’s easy to check how much propane you have and figure out how many more meals you can cook with what’s in your tank. Here are some tips to help you out:

Checking Your Grill Tank’s Propane Level

Whether you’re just planning to cook for the family or need to grill a feast for neighbors and friends, you want to know you have enough in the tank to finish the meal. Here are some ways to check your propane level.

The warm water method:

  1. Fill a small bucket with warm to hot tap water.
  2. Pour the water down the side of the tank.
  3. Run your hand along the side of the tank and feel for a cool spot. The top of the cool spot indicates the fill level of the tank because the liquid propane inside the tank will absorb the heat from the water and make the metal wall of the tank cool to the touch.

Weighing your tank:

  1. Find the two numbers stamped on the handle of your tank. One is the water capacity (WC) and the other is the tare weight (TW). Your tank’s tare weight is its weight when it’s empty.
  2. Weigh the tank on a scale.
  3. Subtract the tank’s tare weight from its current weight. The difference is how much propane is left.

Install an external gauge.

You can choose from a variety of gauge types:

  1. Inline pressure gauges install between the gas line from the grill and the cut-off valve on the tank, measuring pressures to determine how full the tank is.
  2. Analog propane scales look like luggage scales and are pre-set based on your tank’s TW.
  3. Digital propane tank scales give a digital readout of remaining cook time and gas fill percentage. Some even connect to smart phone apps.

How Much Grill Time Do You Have?

What does this all mean in terms of how much grill time you have left? Here’s a general rule of thumb: A medium-sized grill on high heat will use approximately two pounds of fuel per meal. So, a 20-pound tank should provide 18 to 20 hours of cooking time. If you have a larger grill, you may get roughly half that amount of cooking time with a 20-pound tank.

Remember, these are just estimates. Several factors will affect how much cooking time you’ll get out of a tank. If you have a backup cylinder, you never have to worry about being caught without enough propane to get grilling.
